Whereas pattern-mixing was once a new trend in the fashion industry, it’s settled in as a key feature in any fashion-savvy wardrobe. Clothing can be recycled time and time again when worn in different ways, with new wardrobe pieces or by a simple change in accessories! Playing with patterns can seem intimidating, but a little creativity and experimentation can make it work for everyone! Print, texture and color clashes can be the start of a fantastic outfit!

Today’s Fashionista shows a great example of casual pattern-mixing with her summery boho look! She pairs an adorable multi-print dress with a lacy cardigan. Cutouts and sheer panels, like the back of this Fashionista’s cardigan, are great ways to frame interesting colors or prints that would otherwise be covered up. She accessorizes with multiple leather pieces in different shades, from her cross-body bag to her strappy sandals.

Name: Kelsey Waitkus

Year: Senor

Major: Graphic design

CollegeFashionista: What’s a typical on-campus outfit for you?

Kelsey: I usually wear a dress with sandals. It’s easy, I don’t have to think too hard about it.

CF: What’s your favorite thing about summer style?

KW: No pants! Haha, you know what I mean! I wait all year to wear skirts.

CF: How does your style change with the seasons?

KW: I dress up a little more when it’s warm out.  I love summertime! When it’s cold I usually just throw on a sweatshirt and jeans.

How To: Get inspired by this Fashionista’s layered summer look by mixing and matching items in your own closet! Try wearing a sheer or lace top with a bright colored tank top underneath! Also, look for mixed-media accessories like a beaded leather bag or lacy oxford shoes. Get creative and have fun with your old pieces!
